Beef heart dissection by Lilliput Station on flickr

This is one of my favourite topics 🙂  We’ll learn about the human transport system – blood, blood vessels and the heart.

These are the one and two presentations that we will use in class. This one from Mr Hobbins also very good: How-your-Heart-beats and 6.2 Transport

And for all you budding surgeons, here is a virtual heart transplant to try.

Just a few of the questions we need to answer:

  • What is blood made of?
  • Why do we need a transport system?
  • How is the structure of the heart related to its function?
  • Why and how is the structure of arteries, veins and capillaries different?
  • How is heart rate controlled?

Plastic model by mricha15 on flickr

This unit is part of the bigger Topic 6 of the syllabus.  In this section we need to be able to:

  • Explain why digestion is necessary, and what role enzymes play in digestion.
  • Draw and label a diagram of the human digestive system.
  • Outline the functions of the main parts of the digestive system.
  • Distinguish between absorption and assimilation.
  • Relate the structure of the villus to its function.

The syllabus guide is here: Topic-6-syllabus-outline

Some excellent resources to help us through this unit.  Here, here and here.

We’ll also do a dissection of animal intestines, so look forward to that!  When else will you have the opportunity to put your hand inside a goat’s stomach or simulate peristalsis with real intestines?

This is Topic 10.  Syllabus guide here: IB-Biology-HL-Topic-10-syllabus-guide

Hopefully, much of this will be REVIEW.  I’m planning to spend 3 lessons – no more.

Firstly, meiosisHere’s what you need to know. BE CAREFUL with the vocab.

Next, dihybrid crosses and gene linkage.  This is the fun stuff! Presentation here.  PRACTICE makes maybe not perfect, but certainly BETTER 🙂

Lastly, polygenic inheritance.  What is it and how does it work? This will explain.

First assessment of the year will be MONDAY 15th AUGUST.

What phase of meiosis is shown in this picture?
