Our bodies remain healthy despite coming into contact with germs and microbes many times a day.  This is due to the fact that we have a pretty efficient defence system that protects us from disease.  See here for a presentation on this topic.  For Higher Level students, you need to go further, so here is another useful presentation.

You will be required to make notes for yourself and your classmates on some aspect of this topic.  You may choose to create a podcast, slideshow, prezi or simply a set of written notes.  Get creative!  To see your assignment, please click on the following links.

Growing bacteria

Which surface do you think would contain the most bacteria?  Do you think there will be different kinds of bacteria from the various places tested? 

We’ll do this lab: Growing bacteria lab  which will lead us on to a discussion about the body’s second and third lines of defence, namely phagocytes and antibodies.

Both phagocytes and antibodies are found in the blood.  Phagocytes are non-specific.  This means they engulf any kind of foreign bacteria that enters the body.  Antibodies are specific.  They only work against one particular disease. 

Here is a very simple video showing phagocytosis.  A white blood cell is chasing a bacterium and trying to engulf it.

We’ll use this very good presentation by Mr S Taylor in Bandung, Indonesia to help us understand the concepts.

The Biology Project has problem sets, tutorials, resources and interactive activities.  I particularly like the HIV/AIDS simulation one.

The Cells Alive site has a number of useful links and animations.  Click on the immunology tab on the left hand side and go from there.
