We’ll kick off our new unit on STRUCTURES by looking at the structure of the the atom.  YOU KNOW THIS STUFF ALREADY so the first part will be a recap, then we’ll go beyond the material you covered in Grade 8.

Here’s the presentation we will use in class: KS4 The atom

And here are some practice worksheets to see if you have understood the concepts.  DO THEM! struc of atoms1   basic at struc

This is a useful resource to help you get up to speed with these ideas.

It’s testing time!

Friday, September 25th, 2009

You’ve all been asking, pleading, begging for another assessment.  Well, the good news is, you have one coming up next week – YEAH!

Block H students will take it on THURSDAY 1st OCTOBER.

Block D students will take it on FRIDAY 2nd OCTOBER.

Look through your notes from class, and go back through all the blog posts on atomic structure, the Periodic Table, electron configuration, metals vs non-metals, ionic and covalent bonding, Lewis structures, writing formulae, balancing equations et al.

COME AND SEE ME DURING TUTORIALS if you need help.

PeriodicTable from wisegorilla.com

We have, and will continue, to look at the Periodic Table.  Make sure you bring the paper version you were given in class with you to every lesson.  It is an important document.

Here are some resources that may be useful.  Read through the notes, and say thanks to Mr. Boulton for producing them, (with a little help from wikipedia). Classification of Elements   Comparison of groups in the periodic table

Here is the link to the video demonstrating what happens when you mix the more reactive alkali metals with water.  We will do Li and Na in class, but nothing quite as exciting as this!

Have a great no homework weekend 🙂

Also, take a look at this link from the BBC Bitesize site.  It will give you some good pre-reading on the topic and help you get up to speed.
